THE COMMUNITY
The Town of Atikokan is located in beautiful Northwestern Ontario, approximately 200 km west of Thunder Bay and 130 km east of Fort Frances and thirty minutes from beautiful Quetico Provincial Park. Atikokan has a population of 2,800 residents. These are citizens that care about their community otherwise known as “The Canoeing Capital of Canada” The main goals of Atikokan Town Council is to promote economic development and become even more known as a community that is “open for business”.
Our strategic plan consists of four pillars; Economic Development, Infrastructure, Municipal Effectiveness & Efficiency and Lifestyle (keeping it positive).
After several decades of economic erosion, Atikokan is showing signs of improvement. Osisko Hammond Reef and Bending Lake Iron Ore Group are proceeding with the environmental assessment and feasibility phases of their developments.
Ontario Power Authority and Ontario Power Generation have successfully negotiated a ten year power purchase agreement. As a result, Atikokan Generating Station will be converted from coal to biomass, making this plant the largest capacity 100% biomass fuelled plant in North Amercia. The conversion launch date was October 11, 2012.
Atikokan Renewable Fuels continue to wait for a contract for supply of fuel to the Atikokan Generating Station.
Atikokan is looking very positive as we continue to move toward the future.
